Viral Marketing Doesn't Work - Tell Everyone You Know! As seen at SXSW

This tee shirt cracks me up!  Taken by Jesse Engle, (@CoTweet) CEO of http://CoTweet.com.

Dave’s t-shirt could have easily said “Social” instead of viral.  Can you think of a recent remarkable viral marketing campaign? I can.  Barack Obama and his campaign for President.

How about user created videos in “Obama in 30 seconds contest” Obamain30seconds.org where people created 30 second videos uploaded to Youtube and the winner got their video shown on TV.

Or, the Obama Girl? The chick who danced around professing her love for Obama and got over 17,000,000 views? Sheesh!

They say (and so do I) that Obama won the election because of his social media presence.  He had links to all the major social media networks on his campaign website long before McCain.  Obama was smart to reach out to his followers this way – they got first hand info from the man himself.  Not to mention he announced who his vice presidential running mate was on twitter BEFORE the mainstream media. He made his peeps feel like they were special and “in the know” for following him – a viral campaign played perfectly.

What are you thoughts? Which remarkable viral marketing campaigns do you remember?
