What is the most important factor in SEO Marketing?

Quality Content: The Secret to Higher Rankings

High-quality content.  That’s it.  You can leave now… just kidding! Seriously tho, below I write about how Google is King, and that is true.  Google dictates that they don’t want uninformative websites to clutter up their search results.  So, this is what they demand. (Rightfully so, I think.  This just makes YOUR website better!)

Original, unique, and valuable content.  If you provide content that users/searchers love Google will reward you with high rankings.  Google knows people love your content because they share it, quote it, link back to your page, and share it on social media.  The more content love you give to readers, the more love Google gives you.

Did I mention the competition is exceedingly high? Hooo boy! Yes, it is.  But, you have to start somewhere.

Let’s talk about what SEO is…

SEO Services

When you want to bring foot traffic to your brick-and-mortar business, you put up signs, place radio+TV+newspaper ads, and hand out flyers, right?   Search Engine Optimization is the online version of all these marketing tactics. You may have the best-looking, well-designed website in the world, but if it’s buried under all the internet clutter, then it’s completely pointless. You need to give signals and directions that lead straight to your website.  By optimizing your content, you’re telling the search engines that your site has relevant information that people are looking for.

Why Do You Need SEO Today?

My favorite short answer is “Groceries.”  Ya gotta get sales to afford groceries. Seriously tho, website leads convert into customers 24/7. Surveys show that SEO ranks highest with growing importance as a source of leads, gaining a grade of 94% — beating social media (85%), emails (79%), and blogs (68%). (Astonishing numbers, right?!)  Studies also found that the level of SEO being conducted by businesses is directly proportional to the conversion rates they get. A company doing trial or basic SEO gets only 2% conversion rate but that rises when the business moves up to more advanced and long-term SEO with a 10% average conversion rate.

What is “Organic SEO”?

Organic Search engine optimization is the process of improving the ranking of your web pages on search engines, in other words, NOT using paid ads. SEO aims to lift your web pages to the top of organic or unpaid search results pages (Google, Yahoo, and Bing). This way, prospects will find your website when they make search engine inquiries about your business or brand, or queries about a product or service you offer.  Organic is best, but not easy to do.

SEO is Evergreen

Everything about SEO accumulates over time. Every article, every backlink, every press release or bit of information about your company increases the value of your brand. Eventually, this snowballs into organically setting up authority for your site. It’s called organic SEO because once you’ve cultivated and nurtured your online brand, it will naturally grow and progress by itself.  Evergreen SEO is content from 2, 5, 10 years ago that is still relevant.  (Silly fun fact: I wrote about my daughter’s pink cast her sister bedazzled in 2005 when she broke her arm – for years that post got traffic for “pink cast.”  – LOL!)

Why is SEO catered to Google?

Our SEO methods adhere to Google’s recommendations, because today, 91% of people online use search engines frequently, and Google takes a commanding 92% market share. If you dominate Google, you’ll dominate the search rankings. People will find you if they can find you on Google.

Google is a product, noun, and a verb

Google —by far— dominates the internet regarding information search. They are absolutely and unequivocally the authority on information logistics, so much so that pop culture transformed it into a verb. To “google” something has become a household word that is synonymous with knowledge.  Unconsciously, Google is woven into our daily lives.

White Hat SEO

Unlike other freelancers and agencies, we use “white hat”😇 strategies. I’m surprised that in 2023 this still happens.  Google and other search engines hate “black hat”👹 or dubious optimization efforts like spamming, keyword stuffing, and cloaking. In fact, our methodologies abide by the latest algorithm updates by Google, such as Penguin, Panda, and broad core updates. Do it right, or don’t do it at all. (Just my philosophy… BTW, did you know that Google makes —on average— 3000 tweaks to their algorithm daily? I Googled it.)

Side note: If the bolding and emoji’s above are annoying or unprofessional to you, I apologize. I’m conducting a test to see how Google reacts.  Just go with it 😜

How long does it take for SEO to work?

Six to twelve months.  SEO is not a get-ranked quick scheme.  To be honest, it’s a commitment. We need to see what we’re dealing with. These 3 elements are the foundation that must be in great shape before we begin.

  • From the Technical SEO aspect, first, we need to determine if there are any tech issues by performing an audit to see what may be preventing your site from ranking. Then we fix those issues. All of them.
  • Second, your existing content. We review everything.  Every page, every post, every image, every file, and a whole lot more.
  • Third, your backlinksBacklinks are in Google’s top 3 factors of ranking.  This tells Google whether your site is a reliable source of information, popular, or trustworthy.  (FYI-here are Google’s 200 Ranking Factors: The Complete List (2022)

Fresh high-quality content will bring measurable leads or conversions but it is impossible to say for sure what your results will be, and in what time frame.

Technical SEO – Stuff under the hood

There’s a lot that happens beyond of the clever words in the content.  Tech SEO is all about:

  • optimizing internal and external link structure
  • writing effective page titles and meta descriptions
  • properly formatting images for search engine readability (aka ALT tags)
  • creating an XML sitemap with proper links
  • checking for duplicate content issues

Making sure header tags are optimized too? Yup! We’ve got it covered! Plus full setup of Google Analytics traffic analysis so you can keep an eye on performance metrics – we won’t leave any stone unturned.

On Page SEO – Your Website Copy and Content

Website content that is logical and easy to read for humans and relevant to search engine algorithms can be a challenge. That’s why we help you create optimized, meaningful pages for each of the topics or services related to your business to give maximum visibility in search results.

You don’t want all your SEO effort being wasted by not including key phrases in your text, such as ‘SEO for Business’ (which is a keyword for The Web Coach), which are essential tools (or phrases) used by web crawlers when they index websites. We provide an extra level of care with every webpage by crafting unique meta descriptions that appear underneath their titles and URLs within SERPs (search engine result pages).

Let my professionals make sure everything has been ticked off before launching your online presence into today’s highly competitive digital landscape.

Off Page SEO – Do others trust you? Do they share your content?

Off-page SEO is a must. Through customized listings with the major search engines, we make sure that visibility and rank are improved. We also arm our clients with an incredibly powerful tool to strengthen their online presence even more over time! (remember the term; Evergreen SEO) Knowing how off-page optimization affects ranking can be just as valuable as putting it into practice – don’t let this opportunity slip away!

Common SEO terms

Don’t be afraid of the SEO acronyms; here’s a translation

SEO – Search Engine Optimization: writing and providing quality content on a particular topic optimized to gain more readers.

SEM – Search Engine Marketing: using Google ads to get paid traffic.

SMM – Social Media Marketing: using social media Facebook, Instagram, etc to drive traffic to your sales funnel.

SERPS – Search Engine Results Page:  the results page that shows all the listings for a particular search term.  Starts a page one thru infinity.  The ultimate goal is to be near the top of page one.  Being “buried” on page 3 or 4 could mean your content will never be found.

Bounce Rate – when someone clicks away and leaves  a website without clicking anywhere else one the web page.  Most likely, they “bounced” or left because the site was loading slow, or they didn’t see anything interesting or relevant to their search.

Domain Authority – a website that Google deemed an expert in their industry because they offer content that is the “authority” over their competitors.  Google rewards website owners who provide quality relevant information.

Schema Markup (Schema) – Code that tells Google more information about a web page and dramatically changes how your site shows up in SERPs.  See example.

Redirects (301 redirect) – Redirects are like “mail forwarding” for your web pages.  If you change a URL for whatever reason ie. thewebcoach.net/dogs/running-on-the-beach, to thewebcoach.net/dogs-running-on-the-beach, anywhere the first URL is listed on the internet the link will open up as an errror “page not found”.  You need to create a redirect to the new URL you created.

ALT Text/Tag – simple description of what the images is.  If you place an image of a dog running on the beach, that’s what you should put in the image “alt-tag.”

The Fold – This is a term from newspaper editors.  Above the fold is content that is in the top half of the front page.  Think of how you see the newspaper folded, the leading news story of the day has it’s headline “above the fold”.  For the internet, above the fold is the entire screen of the website when you first open it.  Search engines prioritize copy placed above the fold on your website.

Internal Link – links to other pages or content within your website.  (could be documents, or images as well)

External Link– links that leave your website to go to another.  In the case of the dog running on the beach page, we might link to the beach’s business website.

Inbound Link – links from other websites to yours.  Sometimes people call this good “seo juice” meaning it’s great for your websites rankings to have incoming links from other authoritative high-ranking sites.

Headings –Another term from newspaper editorials or even Microsoft Word.  Headings give the reader a overview into what they might be reading.  There are also different weights of importance of headings (also called headers) H1 usually has a big bold font, is very important and basically the topic of the content following.  H2 might be the sub headings or sections of content and so on. (smaller font, but larger than the body text)  Google likes each page to have one H1, and the remaining subheadings listed as H2’s.  Google reads heading tags so it understands the content on your page.

HTML Structure – Hyper Text Markup Language.  Yes, it is a “language” just like Spanish or French.  This is the standardized structure of creating a website that tells web browsers how to display the page.

Keyword – is used two ways.  One, a website owner will add key words and phrases to their content on the web page so that users can search for those words in a web browser and find web pages that contain the key words on the topic they are looking for.  Example: you may type into the Google search bar “dog friendly beach” to find beaches near you to take your dog.  And, two…

Long Tail Keyword (Term or Phrase) – essentially adding more information to your search.  Example: “dog friendly beach in Cleveland Ohio”.  Long tail keywords enable you to draw visitors to your site whereas “dog friendly beach” is harder to rank for since it’s not specific to any area.

Metadata (Page Title) – Each web page has a title.  This describes what your page is about.  If your website has twenty pages, you’ll need twenty page titles.  Example: contact, services, about us, etc.

Meta Description (Page Description) – A brief description less than 160 characters of the page contents describing what the page is about.  Displayed under the title of each search engine result.

Sitemap – a document/map that web “crawlers” can read that tells what pages are associated with a website to be indexed.

Snippets – Google will sometimes clip a bit of info from a webpage that it thinks you might be interested in and places it within search results that generally consists of a title, a URL and a description of the page. Google determines what content will be a featured snippet. You can’t mark any of your content to be a snippet.  More info here on the Google Dev Blog.
